I started the year off in bed. During the first few minutes of 2010, I joined the customary viewing-of-the-citywide-fireworks-display from the comfort of our own front yard.
You know, seeing as I live on a mountain and am paranoid about lighting fireworks myself.
After the best of the fireworks were done, I proceeded to my room to play MouseHunt. And catch the limited edition New Year's Mouse. Way to go for the holiday spirit.
I don't know. As another year passes by, the festivity of the season just gets lost on me. I don't get excited about putting up Christmas decors. I do not feel the need to wake up extra early just to open Christmas presents. I'm not really a big fan of fireworks.
However, on the afternoon of January 1, 2010, my high school friends and I went on an almost impromptu night out. I say almost because it had been discussed that we would go out but the previous consensus had been a lunch date and 3 o'clock came with nary a peep from our supposed to be host, Kurt.
Knowing my friends, seven o'clock is rarely seven o'clock. But I arrived at our meeting place at seven anyway, armed with Neil Gaiman's Fragile Things. Anyway, at some point during the night, everybody (Earle, Kurt, Marisse, Rolando and Brinee) arrived and we headed off to Kurt's new residence. Marrion, with wife Marikarr in tow, caught up with us and Brinee's apparently mad driving skillz. ^_^
I won't go into much detail but dinner at Kurt's was filled with the usual stimulating 4R & Friends conversation topics, spanning the entire IQ spectrum. From talks of durable rugs, to pornsites impervious to clicks and to how drinking Red Bull is better than eating babies. Curiously enough, these topics somehow involve Brinee. As usual.
(Aside to Dennise and Ramon: Of course there's a story! There's always a story to shout outs like this! - Inside joke if you don't mind.)
After all that intellectual stimulation, we needed to let go of our inhibitions and just go nuts. So we headed over to this new KTV bar called Silver Rain. We usually enjoy ourselves at KTV bars without fail and this was no exception.
Although I'm not too sure about Rolando. He sang one song about jizzing in his pants but while we were singing to Lady Gaga and Beyonce at the top of our lungs, he was playing Tetris on his iPhone.
Tetris.
Like Earle said, we mere mortals lack the IQ (and the English Lit. degree) to hold the interest of someone whose immediate synonym for escape is redemption. And dammit, I should have known that when he acts out tying a knot, think shawshank.
Anyway, despite my deplorable lack of Christmas spirit, the holidays still hold a special meaning for me. Because it is during this time when true friends from wherever they are, get together and just --- be together. Whatever that entails.
Happy New Year everyone.
