A Nerd's Night Out

Yesterday, I was on a mad scramble looking for relievers because I seriously did not want to go on duty. Laziness, irresponsibility... call it whatever you want but after working my ass off last December and with a very busy January ahead, I think I deserve a break.

And nothing spells *snerk* vacation more than... tan-da-da-daaaaan... BOGGLE!

It all started with Brinee, as most crazy 4R and Friends shenanigans do. Apparently, Carlos is like the God of Boggle and Brinee, in her infinite loyalty to 4R, would not take this lying down. Hence, she has taunted Carlos with predictions of defeat at the hands of her friends, namely Marisse the Lawyer and Farina the Doctor, as though we had Boggle electives in graduate school.

Then after the whole Shawshank Incident that came with the appearance of the English Lit. Major, the Boggle issue was up again and Brinee succeeded in synchronizing schedules.

Which leads us to January 2 at Bo's. Of course, three o'clock is rarely three o'clock so I was there first. Again. I have not played Boggle in over a decade but I was pretty confident we'd be able to knock Carlos off his high horse, considering that Rolando was going to be on our team.

But we were WRONG.

The whole thing turned into a boys vs. girls affair and we were finagled out of our 96 pesos.

Okay, maybe they did win fair and square but... but... Marisse is blind as a bat, I haven't played Boggle in like, forever and Brinee wasn't even trying!

And there was something about the alignment of the planets and stars that night that made it impossible for us to win. Blame it on the cosmos, I say.

Aaanyway, got over it. Who knows, we might win next time. If we played Drunk Boggle and scrambled Rolando's brains with opiates.

And tied both his hands to a tree.

And gave him an eye patch.

On both eyes.

...

Enough about Boggle.

After spending the Boggle earnings on dinner at Mom's Corner, we proceeded to play Rock Band! Woot! After an hour, the attendant asked us if we were going to continue playing and everyone was like, "Sure! One more hour! Can't hold back a rockstar!" (Okay, we never said that.)

But then a few minutes into the second hour of gameplay, Rolando goes, "Okay, guys. Thanks for the fun. Me and the boys are heading out now." And he was practically out the door.

Brinee and I were like, "Wha-- Who-- What?! What the.."

Reckless abandoment.

And it wasn't helping that Marisse had gone home to get something and was just waiting for us to tell her where to catch up if we were going anywhere else after Rock Band. But seeing as we had nowhere to go, she was just going to pass and go to sleep.

At a loss on where to go, Brinee and I went with Carlos to Limketkai which seemed to be bursting with party people. We, on the other hand, camped out at Bo's Coffee and logged on to Facebook. Where we find Marisse commenting on pictures and what the hell --- she said she was asleep!

But the attorney took pity on the Lost Girls and invited us into her home where we could get her car and drive around looking for fun. When we got there, we could not find anyone to go on a joyride with us. (In all fairness, it was one o'clock in the morning.) So, we shared gossip and sob stories like the girls that we are over a round of drinks.

Actually, it was only water.

We did go round Ketkai in Marisse's car with Brinee in the driver's seat. But on the way back when Brinee had already left, Marisse drove me home for the very first time.

And I did not die.

Hehehe... Kidding, Mars! I know you can drive. Your cojones glands just haven't been secreting enough confidence hormones.

Dick the Nerd GOD

I've been re-watching all six seasons of 3rd Rock From The Sun and I have been laughing everyday for the past weeks. I'm not even sure if I'm the only one who finds this series absolutely hilarious but I really don't care.

This is one of the scenes that proves I gravitate toward the nerd end of the spectrum.

*sigh*

High School Diaries: Nerdvana

Some people are born great, some become great while others have greatness thrust upon them.

I'm pretty sure I was born a nerd.

At age 4, I stuck a key into an electric outlet. Oh, I
knew that I would get electrocuted but I felt compelled to do it. I wanted to know what it felt like to have an electric current coursing through my body. Typical of a crazy scientist.

At age 8, I discovered that my family name was actually this little town in Spain because I decided one summer that I was going to finish reading our world atlas. Who
reads an ATLAS?!

At age 12, I won 3rd (or 2
nd place, not sure) at a Science Congress for a half-assed investigatory project. It was basically a vegetable/fruit juice and when they asked what nutrients would be found in it, I just recited whatever vitamins and minerals I assumed would be in the drink. I didn't really know for sure since I didn't do any actual research.

Okay, maybe that wasn't so much
nerdiness as it was LYING. Through my teeth. But lying involves very complex neuronal interactions and a lot more thinking so there.

Anyway,
nerdically speaking, high school pretty much didn't deviate from my path to Nerdvana.

July 19, 1996
Today, we had our computer class and well, I finished early. The others didn't save last week's activity so they had to do it again.
I knew my tendency to refuse to delete anything was good for something.

November 16, 1996
We had our recollection today. It wasn't that nice... But I'd never miss it for the world. We still had fun during the BREAKS, you know!
I am such a heathen. But I was never any good at being obligated to experience God's presence.

March 25, 1997
I actually used words like INEFFABLE.
I really did. Like in normal conversation. I don't know if it amounts to being pretentious or just wanting to improve my vocabulary. Or maybe what I was talking about really was ineffable!

August 27, 1997
I made my brother's investigatory project for the entire day.
I am such a tool. But I do like making things up and making them sound all smart and factual. I actually made an investigatory project comparing the strength of red and black ants. From the methodology down to the conclusions, everything was off the internet. I can't believe whoever checked that investigatory project actually believed that my brother collected red and black ants and counted how many grains of rice they could carry x time x distance. Who's the tool now? Awesooooome.

October 30, 1998
When I get a job, I will find a tape of Flower Drum Song for sale and I will buy it.
*snerk* TAPE. *giggle* BUY. I do have that movie at home now. In my external drive. Downloaded for FREE.

May 27, 1998
Well, the major news this summer are Seinfeld's final episode, Viagra, India's nuclear tests, the Clinton Scandal (hasn't ended yet), Oscars, the guy who lost 1/2 inch of his organ having sex with a vacuum cleaner and the death of Frank Sinatra.
The fact that I consider those things major news is rather telling.

December 31, 1998
I finally spell WEIRD correctly.
Because I used to spell it WIERD. 'Coz you know, "I before E except after C." Should've qualified that to exclude WEIRD.

February 21, 1999
The boy talk was so boring that the idea of sitting in a corner doing nothing appealed to me that I did.
But seriously, I like corners. I prefer to sleep with my bed against the wall. If teachers in the Philippines dealt punishment by making me sit in a corner, I would actually be fine with it. Happy even. Does that mean I'm autistic? Because that would really explain a lot.

I still have a life. Haven't arrived at
Nerdvana yet but as evidenced above, I may have made a few stops at Geeksville and Dorkmania.

Coming to theaters near you...

Corpusian Memories

Back in high school, I kept a diary. Old school blogging in a sense. I was reading the entries and some of them had me weeping with laughter. At one o'clock in the morning.

However, this particular one had Dennise ROTFL.

"During Values class, Marrion wrote on my forehead with chalk."

Just so you know, I don't let people write on my forehead with chalk. Marrion's just an ass. Everyone has a mortal enemy in high school. Mine just stayed with me until I passed the medical board exam. My relationship with Marrion has been entertaining my friends for years.

Speaking of high school memories, Dennise told me of this thing that happened in 2nd year Biology class that I don't remember but I think is so totally typical of me.

(Scenario: Farina is chatting with a seatmate,
not paying attention to class)

Teacher Vicky:
Farina, what's going on? Would you like to share
what you are talking about to the whole class?

Farina (the smart aleck):
I was just wondering if Alpha Centauri is brighter than the sun,
considering that it is the brightest star.

Teacher Vicky:

Uh...

I am the coolest nerd. By present standards.

When I grow up...

I want to be a Terabyte. And store a lot of things off the internet. *snerk*

I was downloading episodes of The Big Bang Theory when the internet connection switched from "Wow, that was fast!" to "You think this'll be done by Christmas?". So, might as well blog about... well, anything. Warning: topic hopping.

BIG BANG THEORY:
Dennise made me watch this series but I've only seen the first episode. But that was enough for me to realize I liked it. You see, I have a condition called nerdophilia. I am strangely attracted to nerds. Even if they aren't hot nerds. Because there are hot nerds. (see Henry from Ugly Betty season 2). My history of nerdophilia dates back to 1989 when 7 year old me was drooling all over Doogie Howser saying, "The patient has a murmur of mitral insufficiency." Later, my crushes turned out to be class nerds but the social hierarchy in the Philippine educational system is different from that in the States. Nerds here could also be the bullies and the campus hearththrob, all at the same time. First boyfriend was an International Studies student who was named after a Lebanese writer. Second boyfriend was a Philosophy student who had a webcomic. Third and current isn't the stereotypical nerd but he was top 3 in my class during medical school. And he really wasn't even trying very hard.

Now, it comes full circle to me going gaga over Barney (How I Met Your Mother) played by Neil Patrick Harris (who played Doogie Howser). He plays a playboy in the series but he's still kind of nerdy. He has countless theories and actually wrote a Bro Code that reads like the constitution. He's being a player, nerd-style. *hypothetical fist bump* (The fact that he's gay... not a deterrent.)

Connection's getting fcky. Let's continue this some other time.
